ANNUAL IRONDEQUOIT DEER MANAGEMENT BOW HUNT PROGRAM TO BEGIN MONDAY, OCTOBER 2nd

The Irondequoit Police Department today announces the annual Deer Management Program Bow Hunt in Irondequoit will open on Monday, October 2nd. This program has been in existence in Irondequoit since the late 1990s and has served to manage Irondequoit’s urban deer population, especially with regards to reducing deer-related motor vehicle accidents.

Prior to being accepted as a hunting site, the Irondequoit Police Department conducts a site visit to ensure safety and compatibility with the Town Code. Only those properties that have consented to allowing bow hunting on the premises and pass certain requirements relative to size, proximity to residences and roadways are included in the program.

Only licensed hunters who are authorized to participate in the program and who have passed a stringent proficiency test are eligible to take part. Hunters must possess a current and valid New York State hunting license, a current and valid New York State bowhunter education certificate issued by the DEC, and a current and valid deer management permit, issued by the DEC for Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) 8C, to be considered to participate in this program. Per Town Code, the Irondequoit Deer Management Program Bow Hunt is limited to a total number of 30 hunters on any given day.

The Irondequoit Police Department administers the program, which is governed by Chapter 93 of the Town Code. The bow hunt only takes place on school days and does not occur when school is not in session. Hunting is only permitted from sunrise to noon, and generally takes place through the second week of December but may end sooner at the discretion of the Town.
